I offer a proofreading service specially tailored to authors. Once your book is edited and laid out ready for publishing, the final proofread is a last check that the text is crisp and ready to meet the public.
I will work through your formatted text to find any spelling mistakes or other errors of grammar, punctuation or formatting. I apply a consistent style throughout so that your readers have a smooth reading experience and stay immersed in the world of your story.
At this stage in the process, I won’t be making any major changes to the text.
What you will get:
Style sheet: a document showing the choices I have made with spelling, punctuation and other preferences.
Marked-up manuscript: your text with the changes visible so you can approve or reject them, so you always retain control over your book.
Clean copy: a copy of the manuscript with all of your approved changes in place and no other editing marks, ready to publish.
What kind of software?
Microsoft Word is the most efficient for novels, but I can also proofread using Adobe, and other options may be possible if they are easier for you.
How much does it cost?
I will be able to give you a quote once I have seen a 1000-word sample of your book. This is best taken from the middle of the text, since the beginning and end of a manuscript tend to be the most polished.
How long does proofreading take?
This depends on how much work the text needs and can be affected by how complex the sentences are, among other factors. I can give a time estimate after seeing a 1000-word sample. A typical turnaround might be four to six weeks for a 90 000-word manuscript.
